So moving on to the tag.. Night-time at Amanda’s house.
Amanda: Oh. I don’t know, Mother. I feel silly.
Dotty: Well, you didn’t seem to mind wearing something like that 15 years ago.
Amanda: Mother, that was 15 years ago, and besides that, my dress was different. It had big blue patches on it. It made a statement.
[SMK is a case in point: Clothes are all about context! and there are 80’s clothes we didn’t mind wearing- in the 80’s.. and the statement was ummmm.. errr… anyone?! but wear them now?! ]
[Is it just me or 15 years ago would a granny have worn that dress?! Big blue patches would not have helped.. unless you were smoking something Amanda! Amanda: Busted!]
Dotty: Hmm. I see.
[Is this later that night? because I’m pretty sure Amanda would not have gotten any sleep the night before.. she probably just wants to sleep! Oh and lol… What did she tell Dotty about where she stayed the night before?! – I’m reminded of the tag of Times are a changing where Dotty thinks she was partying all night with a Baron ]
The boys walk into the kitchen.
Jamie: Boy, mom, you could still smell that termite gas upstairs.
Amanda: Sweetheart, I’m sure that’s your imagination… [LOL she is very sure! 🙂 ] …It’s had plenty of time to air out. Don’t worry about it.
Phillip: Hey, mom, where did you get the ancient threads?
Jamie: Garage sale?
Amanda gives her mother a wordless look.
I’m guessing it’s a- ‘See! it’s awful’ look. What do you think?
Dotty chokes a little on her drink.
Amanda: Mother. I can’t do it. I just can’t do it. Please .
Amanda hands the dress back to Dotty.. guessing that was Dotty’s dress?? or Dotty had bought or sourced a dress for Amanda? The way she hands it back it’s like it’s from Dotty..?
Dotty: OK.
[Dotty herds the boys out of the kitchen,]
Jamie: What’d I say? [It’s tag time! You’ve gotta go so Lee and Amanda can finish the episode alone and together ]
Amanda: Nothing, sweetheart.
Dotty: Come on, let’s go. Bring your cookies. It’s a long story.
Amanda: And do your homework Phillip. You know.
Phillip: Aw, mom.
Dotty gives Amanda a last look as she leaves laughing at Amanda.
[Hey- looks like Jamie has a plaster cast on his right hand. I haven’t seen that before. I wonder if we see that in another episode.. maybe we can all keep an eye out ]
Amanda: Oh, mother, you shouldn’t laugh at me.
Amanda lets out a massive sign.. and.. there’s loud knocking at the back door.
Amanda makes her way to the back door.
We cut outside where Lee is stepping back from the house.. Oh my.. he seems to have patches on his jeans (big blue patches?! What a statement!) and beads?! and a fringe jacket?
As he waits Lee seems to dip his head and try to contain himself , he’s grinning from ear to ear – he seems excited to be surprising Amanda It’s very cute! It’s that old Bashful Lee moment from ship of spies (the one Debilyn loves – Hiya Debilyn miss ya!) do you all know the one I mean?
Isn’t it fabulous to see Mr super suave is happy to get dressed up in hippy rags and look a bit ridiculous to have fun and be with Amanda?
Why am I reminded of the attitude he gave in that ridiculous plaid Jacket and that hat of Dan er Dean’s in Remembrance of Things Past? Whahahaha!
Lee doesn’t worry about his suave reputation anymore and I love it!!!
Amanda looks through the blinds.. then looks up to check no one sees her going outside.
She opens the door and before she’s had a chance to close the door Lee says; Hey, baby, what’s happenin’?
Amanda: Shhhh!
[funny how the moment Amanda came outside it got darker out there.. whooo romantic lighting?! ]
[You’ve gotta love it- only Amanda would shush Lee when she finds him at her back door
haaaaaaa..
And I like to think Lee is not so careful about her family finding out now because he wishes for an ‘accidental’ discovery – you know?! There’s a part of Lee now that would like to be known by her family?]
In response to her shhh Lee just laughs.. and throws up his arms as if to say ta da!
Love how Amanda comes to stand oh so close while his arms are outstretched like that still.. almost like she wants a repeat of earlier that day
Amanda (flatly): Where’d you get the ancient threads?
Lee: The a…
Amanda: Uh-huh.
[I curse the low lighting in this scene!!!! Trying to get a clear image is very hard – boooo! okay it’s romantic.. I’ll hang in there]
Lee: Well I heard through the grapevine.. [that sounds like the name of a good song and a 60’s pun!]
…that you just might be needing an escort to your reunion.
Amanda: Oh, no, I’m not gonna go to the reunion.
[Love how Amanda so naturally reaches out to play with Lee’s necklace lol]
[Is it just me or do those beads look a little like Francine’s tribal necklace?]
Lee: And why not?
Amanda: I’m not gonna go.
Lee: Amanda, c…
Amanda: I don’t like the dress.
Time for Lee to bring out the big guns!
He takes Amanda by both arms- just like he did at the start of the episode..
Lee bends down to the same height as Amanda..
Lee: Come on…
…Let’s go…
…We’ll make the perfect couple. Huh?
Amanda: OK, thanks. Yeah.
Lee laughs and pulls something out of his back pocket. (A ring? A ring???!!!)
Lee: Here. I brought you something.
He pulls out an envelope and gives it to Amanda.. (Boo not a ring!! 😉 )
She takes it and sees what it is.
Amanda: Terrific.
Lee: Tomorrow is your grocery day, right?
[Lee knows that about her? How sweet is that.. He really loves to know even the most mundane of things about Amanda
]
Amanda: Yeah, that’s right…
[Nah.. surely that can’t be right – Amanda told Jepard in post 3 that tomorrow was her grocery day and there’s been at least one night since then.. Maybe Amanda exaggerated to Jepard so she’d get her cheque ]
… Oh. Ohhh, boy!!
Lee: What’s the matter? Have they overpaid you again?
Amanda: No, no.
Lee: What?
Amanda: It’s a day late and exactly one dollar short!…
…Hah.
Here come the dimples!
So that’s the end of this episode everyone.. what a fabulous journey it’s been through a much loved episode I hope you’ve enjoyed it as much as I have!
I think I’ve been seeing Lee and Amanda as dating but not calling it dating for a long time now.. since A Lovely little affair (which I view as after over the limit).. and all this time they’ve been working through what a relationship together means..
Lee wanting to be part of her family, Amanda putting her first marriage and feelings for Joe to rest, Lee and Amanda’s work partnership growing and solidifying, Amanda’s growth as a future agent, Lee and Amanda growing in their love for each other and their acceptance of that love, Lee and Amanda working through the danger of their work and how to live with that and enter into a romantic relationships.. in spite of a few episodes which do not sparkle quite so brightly as others – there have been many major happenings between these two right throughout season 3 – even between episodes 5 and 16.
So I think that by now the words haven’t been spoken, but neither is pretending anymore that they are not dating (while they date) – and Lee’s line here about making the perfect couple seems to openly admit it too.. no more pretending it’s for a cover.. or because they are work partners, or because they are friends – ‘we’ll make the perfect couple’ says so much – it’s obliquely saying they are together the perfect romantic couple (IMHO) in the clearest way it’s been said so far and when Amanda hears this? Being held by Lee with both arms? She can’t resist no matter how fugly that dress is which she doesn’t want to wear
– and she immediately caves.
Plus, Neither got any sleep the night before so they both look ridiculously gorgeous all things considered..
It feels like we can expect the words to be said and that final step to be taken between these two possibly in the very next episode!!! Is something going to hold them back?! We shall see!!
I bet there are fan fics about this reunion.. If you have any you can recommend please do so over at Nedlindger’s in the fan fic thread. It’s really strange how the whole Connie character is completely forgotten.. but it does open up fictional possibilities for us to have fun with I guess
So where are you seeing Lee and Amanda at the end of this episode everyone? Do tell!! What’s your fave most romantic moment of the ep? Do tell!!
BAH!!!!! why did they end it there! so so torturous! I would have loved to seen them together at that reunion!!!!!!!
To me, this is the pivotal turning point in their relationship, where both of them finally take that leap. I think Amanda in retrospect was ready LONG before Lee was, but she was a smart woman, she was patient and didnt push him, but she didnt take any coff from him, either, and she made it clear (the hotel hallway scene in FFFT comes to mind here) that his “floosy lines” werent going to work on her, she wasnt the kind of woman that he would be able to run game on. And for that I SOOOO want to give Amanda a huge pat on the back!

Ha! For me, the turning point for the relationship/dating stuff was always “the talk” in the Q bureau (not sure in which episode) but after rewatching triumvirate yesterday I belive that it’s clearly in this episode.
IMHO, there are a few scenes in here that lead right up to Lee calling them the perfect couple and that in the tag he has clearly decided that they are officially dating. Why else would he be escorting her to a reunion? IMHO that’s a really couply thing to do and why would you volunteer to take a casual “friend” to their reunion?!
The elevator scene in the Cumberland is one of my all time favourites: Lee is standing taller and seems to grow a few inches (with pride that he can comfort her and is her “safe place”?!) right before the doors close. BB and KJ really know how to convey feelings with just a look, a touch or a change in posture. That’s what I love about this show!
The scene in the room as he just looks at her. I like to think that he is trying to comprehend what she means to him here and that he is pondering the possibilities.
The deal with the devil: in my opinion he is saying so much more than “I’m glad you’re ok” with the way he says that he is sure glad he made that deal.

I think I know which episode you’re referring to and we’re not there yet. So I can’t mention it.
I agree with all you’ve said here. I think this might be the episode where they reveal the most about their feelings and there seems to be a mutual understanding. The “perfect couple” is a slip of the tongue. Lee is getting anxious (in a good way). But in the end, I think it’s enough that they’ve arrived at this point. And it’s clear they’re happy. They know that whatever lies ahead is within reach and most importantly that they will get there some day.

I’ve often wondered if this was supposed to be a high school or college reunion. If high school then I wonder if Conrad Barnhill will be there? That could be a interesting story there. At either reunion Amanda will make every woman jealous with being on Lee’s arm. I honestly don’t blame Amanda for not wanting to go, shoot I’ve only gone to one of each of my reunions in the last 26 years.

So I’ve never really thought much about this tag, instead, I’ve just enjoyed Lee telling Amanda they’d make the perfect couple. Every time I hear him say that, I want to shout, “DUH!” at them. Seriously, I’ve never thought that line was premeditated or meant to convey anything to Amanda other than he really wanted to take her to her reunion and spend some time with her having fun. They are both now very comfortable with one another and have accepted each other for who they are. Lee has come around and now sees Amanda’s housewife/normal person status as an advantage and not a liability and Amanda sees the growth and maturity in Lee and the lack of his prior womanizing ways. I love that his “perfect couple” line just comes out so spontaneously. He didn’t meant anything by it, it just came out naturally and he isn’t embarrassed by it. They’ve played couple covers together numerous times and now they can actually go do it and have fun because in a way, they are a couple. They are a work couple, a couple of friends, and a romantic couple (although I still think that is a secret that each of them holds to themselves).
But, since the elevator in my mine shaft only does down a couple of stories instead of the center of the earth, I realize I’m missing out on the opportunity to make a lot more out of this!

Iwsod, it’s a coincidence that you’ve just posted a Pick up Lines post. I was thinking last night about Lee’s greeting to Amanda here, “Hey Baby, what’s happening?”
“Baby” is something I would never imagine him calling Amanda after all the Randi-baby, Candi-baby, etc, etc, flooseys.
I think it works in this context because he was trying to keep his comments and attitude light and fun. I think it’s important that Amanda’s come-back is a good natured dig “Whered you get the ancient threads?” – it’s like she’s saying, “I’ll play along but I’m not just going to fall into your arms, Buster.” One can imagine the “Hey Baby” line having the flooseys just throwing themselves at him.
I don’t think Amanda takes offence at the “Baby” label – I think she knows he just having fun with her, but it’s cute how she wrong-foots him with her come-back.
Once they get into the conversation and Lee gets more serious about making sure she gets his message, he paints the “perfect couple” picture. In contrast to “baby”, these are two words he would never have uttered to a date in the past – wouldn’t want anyone getting the idea that this is about anything long-term.
What does everyone else think of the “Hey Baby” line in this scene?

Hi kiwismh! I think Lee calling Amanda baby may be another Americanism. I think the term ‘baby’ was a popular term in the 60s and not meant in the same way as Randi-baby. I think in this context Lee calling Amanda baby is appropriate, in that in the 60s that is what younger men called girls whether they were friends or more. I think Amanda just views him calling her baby as being in character with his clothing. I could be wrong – perhaps someone else on the blog will confirm?

Hi BJo, I wondered whether it might merely have been a nod to the popular term of the time, but I was trying to make more out of it – as we do here at JWWM 😉

Haa haaaa!!! Yep! we do have a go at making things out of not much sometimes haaa!!! 🙂 what makes it really interesting is that sometimes some of us do this.. and some of us don’t.. and then other times.. some of us do and some of us don’t – we naturally vary- different things interest us: so when we share that with others we can be introducing thoughts others may be interested in too but just hadn’t thought of!
I agree with BJo, I thought the baby reference was just Lee being a hippie..
[I keep thinking of dirty dancing- Nobody puts Baby in a corner!!! and.. that song where they mime and flirt like crazy to ‘Baaaaaby’!]
errr.. I digress..
Kiwismh your connection you made is interesting! I like it! It never entered my head that there was the whole Randi Baby thing! But… it could have entered Amanda’s 🙂 which.. would be really interesting to explore 🙂
For me, I’m not seeing here that Amanda made that connection and if I am to make more out of it (as we like to do JWWM 🙂 ) I would say that it says something that she didn’t think of Randi-baby etc.. etc.. i.e. she’s pretty comfortable, and secure here that Lee is not seeing her as or treating her like one of his lady friends from his old days.. I think for her at this point, old Lee is ancient history(thus the ancient threads?! lol.. now I’m pretty sure I really can’t make anything of that! haaaaa..).
Yes! very coincidental and great timing that my pick up lines post was just published Kiwismh!…
I’m finding the walk has gone on a few years now and I would like to revisit earlier episodes while I continue to walk through season 3..but my lack of detail on those early season 1 eps gets me frustrated haaaaa.. I wonder if there is a coordinated way we could do that for anyone who is interested..without disturbing the current walk.. hmm I’ll ponder that one – but if you have any ideas let me know. You know I make up this blogging things as I go along 😉

🙂 yes, it is fun to really dig in and think about all the dialogue and details of SMK. I never did that with this scene because of how the term was used back then. I think what you say makes a lot of sense, and I agree that Amanda gets him back with the clothing dig and plays along.

My dad was in college during the 60s, and he said that he knew a guy who insisted on calling everyone “baby”, including the guys. (ex. “Hey, Warner-baby! How ya doin’?”) He says that he’s not quite sure now why it started, except that it was a kind of thing people did at the time. Everybody else in his group of friends did it, too, including him.

I guess I always read the “hey Baby” Line as part of that 60’s lingo. But you are completely right about the “Perfect couple” line. Never in a million years would Lee have wanted to send that message, that is, until now.

” Sweetheart, I’m sure that’s your imagination… [LOL she is very sure! 🙂 ] …It’s had plenty of time to air out. Don’t worry about it.” I love this line. I like the idea that Dotty got the dress for her. It suddenly makes more sense to me (though, if that were the case, I would have thought Amanda would have been more appreciative of Dotty’s efforts. Must have been in her “I didn’t get any sleep so I’m a cranky pants today” mood.

Fascinating line of thought here Cindy!
I put it down to the efforts (sourcing a dress for Amanda) not being asked for nor welcomed.. Dotty was interfering too much- I can see Amanda not straight out saying it. lol..
Amanda sees a bit edgy with Dotty her line “Oh, mother, you shouldn’t laugh at me” doesn’t (to me) seem to be tinged with affection.. like her communication usually is. Yep. me thinks Amanda’s telling Dotty to back off.
Does that work?

I like the thought Iwsod of Amanda lamenting her old dress with the blue patches that “made a statement”, and here is Lee with blue patches on his jeans definitely making a statement, “We’ll make the perfect couple”. What a great opportunity for him to say exactly what he’s been thinking, without making it an awkward moment. And I think Amanda gives him the answer he is looking for – there’s no resistance at all from her to his “couple” suggestion. Yes, on the surface, they’re talking abou the reunion but dig a little deeper and I think they both know they are talking about becoming more than just friends.

I love this scene for a couple reasons. Unlike in ALLA where he sort of tricks her into accepting the tickets, he actually asks her out on a date. He made sure to get her check and bring it by her house. He picks out some ‘ancient threads’ to wear. Maybe he had some of his own, maybe he swung by and talked to the hippy clerk and bought some just for the occasion (loving that idea!). All of this, just for Amanda. 🙂

I do like the clothes Lee has chosen – although it does seem more late 60’s hippy than early 70’s Glam transition.
Lee is showing Amanda he has put a lot of thought into this and he is straight-out telling her he wants to be with her as a “couple” this evening… and beyond (I think Amanda must pick up on that – what do others think?)
I agree with you Iwsod – I always thought Lee should have been introduced or become known to the family much earlier – for me it makes sense from the end of WWH when the kids effectively got a pretty good eyeful of this guy*. That would have been rich fodder for subsequent episodes as he would then be able to interact with her family, developing those relationships little by little, slowly over a longer period of time (which alludes to how things pan out in the future so I won’t pursue that thought here).
*Yes, they would have wondered why a Govt film director could kick ass so expertly, but Lee could just tell them he’s a Karate black belt, or some such cover story.
Anyway, I like this scene right up to the lame joke at the end. It’s sweet how easily Amanda changes her mind about going to the reunion when she sees that look in Lee’s eyes. Does she see this as an opportunity to spend some quality time with him away from the distractions of work and family, to further explore those feelings she didn’t have time or head-space to dwell on earlier in the episode?
There’s also rich fodder for fanfic writers here – I think the time they spend at the reunion together is one of those off-screen scenes that would have contributed a great deal to this new phase of their relationship.
Sometimes ya just want to go back in time and wring the writer’s neck…
Kiwismh is clearly feeling a bit narky and violent today. Too much Jepard perhaps. 😈

I have to agree about the lame ending. Not even sure why being $1 short is so funny? Is my sense of humour MIA? In an episode full of such great moments, that just falls flat. Almost like someone edited the story vigorously that far, and then suddenly had had enough and didn’t bother with the last 30 seconds.
Lee is certainly less careful here. It started when he delivered the “message” from Penny (or tried to!) and he’s even less cautious here. Yes, almost like he wants to be found out. Also think he should have met Dotty and the boys here. Would have made for some fun moments, and more humour.

Yes, all they had to do was reverse it and it would work. The check should have come first. Then the offer to take her to the reunion. After she has her check, she notices his ‘ancient threads.’ Then, “Come on, we’ll make the perfect couple” and her “alright,” and end the scene with the two staring back at each other. 🙂

The $1 short is from the old saying “a day late and a dollar short.” It might be an Americanism, which is why it just looks odd to you. Basically, it’s something you say when you’ve missed out on something. You were too late, and you wouldn’t have had the money for whatever it is even if you’d been on time. I think I’ve heard some people use it when talking about dealing with some of the hassles of daily life, when things just aren’t working out no matter what they do. The Agency just can’t get Amanda’s check right no matter what. Groan!
It’s not a hilarious joke, but they were trying to be cute there.

Definitely!!! The subtext of it all is how much time, thought and effort Lee has put into Amanda here.. even just remembering her reunion in the first place. I think it shouts he is no longer running scared from being in this perfect couple he’s gone to a lot of effort here to be a part of it
This is a fascinating train of thought Kiwismh! At the end of WWH I would not have imagined 5 episodes down the track that Lee would still not have met Amanda’s family..
This got me thinking. The way Amanda shushes Lee here in the tag – she seems to be the one here who is not prepared for the 2 worlds to meet…
I think for years Amanda has seen Lee as being in one of her worlds, and her family is in the other.. and for me, I think it was wise of Amanda to hold off making the adjustment and adding Lee to her family world until she was certain of him, and of her own feelings for him. If Amanda has integrated her feelings for Lee fully she will need to start adjusting that separation of their worlds.. whooooo this is going to be fun to watch!
I actually cannot remember when they finally meet or how. And I’m glad- it adds to the anticipation and wonder of the story unfolding
Thank you Kiwismh! When we get to the reveal we will be able to look back on this part of the story in a new light I imagine- I look forward to chatting with you about it then!
Rofl at Lee’s govt film director cover story!!! Yes.. what did they tell the boys?
Good question! Yes.. that makes sense it’s been a rather intense episode! She deserves to put on a fugly dress and forget about it for a while haaaaa.. she deserves to have a fun night with Lee and just laugh and enjoy!
Haaaa!!! I actually don’t mind not seeing these things – the imagination is so much better.. and I am guessing that’s what fan fic is for also.. when writing the walk doesn’t take up all my smk time – I’m looking forward to exploring fan fic and all these little moments hinted at in the show!
Lol.. maybe you could just issue the writers a citation.. it would be less paperwork 😉

This is one of those scenes where you have to imagine something different than what’s on the screen… Im talking about that granny dress, of course (sorry, GruvyGranny – I’m sure you’re fashon foward and on-trend as your moniker implies 😉 ).
Anyway, I figure some half-wit in the wardrobe department reached a hand into the Little House on the Prairie closet and threw it into the scene at the last moment.
No way I can see Amanda wearing such a frumpy, high collared, granny-print get-up in the late 60’s/early 70’s. (Even if she does frump it up a bit occasionally in the series – again I blame a lack of talent infiltrating the wardrobe department. Wardrobe moles!)
So, I imagine a lovely flowing faded blue bohemian style dress, maybe with creamy coloured lace up bodice – so she can show off a litle cleavage (which I think her current companion would appreciate 😉 ).
Yes, now I am happy to see them go off to the reunion together. I am sure she might just get a kiss on the cheek (or forehead,,, or both 🙂 ) at the end of the night if she was wearing such a dress.
And sorry to carp and nark, but I hate it when they waste precious Tag moments by descending into some lame comic routine at the end. Who gives a rats a**** about the cheque – let’s see some more meaningful L&A dialogue!

lol.. I was thinking to myself – I bet kiwismh will love (not) that dress! whahhahaa.. I totally agree with you – well put!
rofl yes her current companion would definitely appreciate it 🙂
Oh my.. there’s a thought.. what happened at the end of the night after the reunion?!
Yeah the tag does fall a bit flat when I bother to look beyond the adorable behaviour.. I figure it was a tough ep to live up to..
But Kiwismh you underestimate JWWM’s ability to find loads of meaning in L& A dialogue about a cheque 😉 whahahaahaaa..
So funny to think back to Lee in season 1 and his regular declarations that ‘it’s not a date’!!! and here.. he says they’ll make the perfect couple. wow.. huge changes!!!

No, Kiwismh I do not dress like a granny, even though I am one…and that ugly dress Amanda was going to wear didn’t look like anything I wore in the 60’s, I don’t know what era that “thing” came from., maybe it was on loan from Laura Ingalls. But on the bright side, I thought Lee was looking mighty cute in hi I is “ancient threads”…lol

Maybe part of the reason Amanda was so unthrilled with the dress Dotty picked out is because it wasn’t anything like she would have worn, even in the 60s/70s.

This whole “15 years” thing is confusing me now because that suggests college reunion, but that leads me back the conversation about people’s biographies in the invitation. This will require a rethink now although it does explain the lack of Connie thing.
