Lee and Amanda make their way back to their cabins..
A do not disturb sign is on Amanda’s door…but Lee has left his own secret little burglar alarm- a match trick. I guess he
balanced it so if the door opened it fell over..? LOL didn’t Mad Magazine spoof this kind of thing?? Amanda put a piece of scotch tape between the doors or something! Anyway.. I digress! Someone has entered the room inspite of the do not disturb sign [How fabulous to think of the next time we see one of those on SMK!!
]
Lee draws his gun.. tells Amanda to stay where she is and then very quietly enters Amanda’s room..Doesn’t he look gorgeous in stealth mode here?
He finds a staff member, with his back to the door, snooping in Amanda’s things..
Amanda watches on from the doorway..
Love how Lee walks right into the room, and then makes his presence known!
Lee: Find what you’re lookin for?
The snooper swings with the luggage and hits Lee with it.. He tackles Lee and they hit the cabin door slamming it closed between them and Amanda- and Ta Daaa!! Ta Da! A Magical stunt man.. Lee can delegate his fighting to the on board stuntman…(every cruise line should have one!) what a great cruise company for the spy!!
…that is definitely not Lee doin the fightin!
We see Amanda listening from out in the hallway.. probably sick with worry!
Aha! Amanda’s cabin?? is B-18!
Lee knocks the guy out..and Lee calls to Amanda to come in..
she finds Lee (with not a hair out of place! but once again with a halo behind him!) dragging Emiliano along the floor- LOL! her face as she closes the door is so funny!
Lee dumps Emiliano on Amanda’s bed and says to Amanda: I think this guy needs a glass of water!
Amanda brings a glass of water.. Lee sits up Emiliano…
and LOL – Amanda tips the glass of water over Emiliano’s head! Waking him up!!
Nicely done gag!! I love how when Lee sits him up, it looks like the water is for him to drink!.. and I love how Lee doesn’t need to tell Amanda what the water is to be used for, she just tips it on Emiliano’s head! She is learning!!! Was there an episode where Lee asked Amanda for the same thing and she gave it to Lee and then Lee tipped it on the baddies head to her shock? can’t remember!!.. anyone?
BTW- this is different in the script.. Amanda is not as ‘advanced’ in her learning.. I get the feeling the script was advanced on from it’s original state to show progress in their relationship.. you can see it in a few things ( like the whole set up in Billy’s office being different: leaving out the part about Lee wanting to take Francine but he can’t..) just a hunch of mine..
Emiliano carefully pulls out his identification..
Emiliano: I’m Emiliano Gomez, of the Puerto Faro security police. We suspect one of our part-time operatives may have been killed on a previous voyage.
So, it turns out Emiliano is on the same side, and trying to find Orlando too… Interesting that Lee doesn’t show Emiliano any ID or explain who he works for!! I guess Lee is so authoritative he doesn’t need to??!! Lee just shows him his gun! 😆
So.. time to explain the plot some more!..
Emiliano: Our government is in a very weak position right now. We believe billions of dollars are being smuggled in to fund a violent revolution.
Amanda: You think the money’s being smuggled in on this ship?
Emiliano: That is what Orlando was trying to find out.
Lee: Hey, now, wait a minute. This ship does not dock at Puerto Faro.
Emiliano: We think the money was somehow being funnelled through San Angelo.
Amanda: Isn’t that the island we’re suppose-
(she hesitates a second here! her voice catching)
– to be married on?
Lee pauses a moment as he and Amanda quietly look at each other.. hoooooo haaaaaaaa!!!
Then Lee says quietly: Yeah.
He continues: It’s a good idea, though. The crew, the passengers, they’ll be preoccupied with the wedding ceremonies. You could unload just about anything without drawing suspicion.
I do wish Lee would stop waving that gun around while he talks and just put it away!
Emiliano: Orlando must have been very close to breaking this, or he would not have been discovered.
Lee: You think there’s any chance that he might still be alive?
Emiliano: One always has hope. All I know is he has never missed our contact man before, and he was very serious about this mission.
Emiliano walks over to the other side of the room. Ta Da!!! there is no fruit basket.. See it in the pic below??
[We saw Emiliano deliver it when they first arrived] … it’s been mysteriously replaced with a flower arrangement!
Emiliano: Orlando was a wild and undisciplined man, but he loved our country.
Close up on the ugly flowers!!! Uh oh…
Note to any spies: always check out random flower arrangements that suddenly appear in your cabin! eeeek!
We see Rackam and his eye make up (Arghhhh!!) listening in on their conversation.. thanks to the bug in the ugly flowers… Shame Emiliano hadn’t checked there yet
Lee (via the bug): Then it’s up to us to find out where this insurrectionist money is being hidden and who’s behind it.
Rackam, looking thoughtful, switches off the listening device.. Hmm maybe he wonders: should I remove my pirate eye make up before dealing with this or no?? …. The suspense is killing me..[Hey, I’ll lay off teasing Lee about his.. but the baddies? they are fair game!! ]
One thing interesting about all this.. is another alternation in the script.. smkland.com has the final draft version – (someone correct me if I get the details wrong, I don’t have time to check this) – there is a curious re-write here.. the final draft script has Emiliano saying that Orlando is dead.. not that there is hope.. and Orlando is never seen in the episode or found to be alive at all!
I think by changing it they made a good decision!
I think Orlando possibly being alive (and eventually being found alive) lightens the tone of this episode.. and makes the baddies less evil – not very realistic I know – but when the tone is too ominous or menacing, the romance and the humour can seem a bit out of place (thinking of the pool hall scene in 3 faces of Emily here: the soldiers were killers and serious! Nothing funny about that!) Do you have any thoughts about this??
I think SMK gives up some of the realism for a lighter tone, and does so unapologetically – and I love that! I think come season 4 this lighter tone is lost much more often than earlier in the series.. thoughts?
Well, I shall finish up there for now – Thanks for reading and as always I would love to hear any thoughts about this you would like to share! byeeee.. stay tuned.. the tux is coming!!!!!
Good gag with the water but I wish Amanda had thrown it in his face instead. She’s good at that 😉
I agree with all the comments about Orlando being kept alive. Granted in real world there was little point doing so but thankfully SMKland isn’t the real world 🙂 means I can enjoy the wedding without guilt LOL

Hey iswod! Well, picking up in season three was probably kind of strange, but, honestly, it’s hard to remember what I was thinking in 1986! All I know is I got hooked on it immediately. It was wonderful when it went into syndication and I got to see the first two seasons. It was a bit of a shock as they looked so different.
I fell in love with BB immediately when I started watching! I actually think, though, that I’ve gotten so much more out of the show as an adult. It’s always been more about Lee and Amanda’s relationship than anything else, but as an adult, I see all the small things so much more clearly. I rewind frames just to make sure I see all the looks, touches, expressions, etc. The show is one of the shows from my childhood that still really holds up; story-wise and character-wise.
One thing about tux-Lee, though, the one thing better is 3-piece-suit wearing Lee! He wears those mostly in season 1, but Oh My God he’s gorgeous in them!!
Again, sooooo happy I found this blog!!!! Keep up the wonderful work!!!!

Hi Rachael! Thanks for responding.. lol yes trying to remember what you thought in 1986 would be tough!! I thought you discovered the earlier episodes more recently – tee hee! 🙂
I know what you mean about there being an instant impact – for me.. it was Lee Stetson.. All the way! It wasn’t until I was an adult and rediscovered the show, that I saw how wonderful Amanda is as a character.. I have a real appreciation for her journey now too!
Oh and Lee in a three piece suit?? very true!!! Delish!!!! 😉
Thanks for the encouragement Rachael! it means alot!!!

Hey I just noticed the porthole behind Amanda’s bed – it looks like the set builders took a real window and blocked it up to look like a porthole. That’s funny! LOL I love SMK!! And I love the development of the relationship in this episode!!

I just discovered your blog and am now a huge fan of yours. I love the breakdowns, as I spend lots of time pausing and rewinding frames while watching. I found the show in it’s third season when it originally aired, when I was in middle school. I then caught all the episodes when it went into syndication. I found it on Amazon Prime back in August and have streamed through the entire series 3 times already! Your obsession speaks to me!!!
Keep up the wonderful work!

Hi Rachel! I’m really glad you found us!! Welcome!!!
Ahh good it’s not just me who pauses and rewinds frames!! [KJ has the best facial expressions when you slow it down doesn’t she!]
What was it like to start watching in season three? and then going back to season one to watch? How different did you find Lee and Amanda? I bet you would have an interesting perspective on them!!! Was it a shock?? They are very different in Season one!!! Were you surprised?
Thank goodness for Amazon prime! I am sure if Australians had access to services like that- there would be alot more Scarecrow and Mrs King fans! 😦
Glad my obsession speaks to you! 🙂 I love to hear from readers and have them join in – so feel free to jump in and share what you like Rachel! byeee! And again: Welcome!!!! 😆

Interesting point about the script change. I bet you’re right. There are some pretty heavy baddie moments in the previous episode .. Brunettes throughout, the Emily baddies that you mention, and also the rather brutal stabbing in Bromfield Hall. SMK is basically supposed to be a light-hearted show, so it makes sense that there would be a conscious decision to make the episode (a wedding episode at that) a little gentler. I don’t see any other real reason for bringing a live Orlando into the picture.

Hi Kristen! dreamy quality huh.. that sounds nice! 🙂 I wish I heard it that way, although I could say his voice always has a dreamy quality to me! 😉 😆 what does everyone else think? Thanks for sharing your thoughts Kristen!
When did they fall in love? I could read about that subject for hours and hours! 🙂 yeah I am not yet ready to discuss it either – I’m formulating my thoughts on that now -but for those who are ready- go for it!
Hi Raffie!! Lovely as always to hear from you!! [Wish I could meet you at the reunion..but.. Australia is a long way away and it isn’t going to happen 😦 ]
Thanks Raffie for the feedback on my script idea! Lovely to hear even further evidence for that little theory! 🙂 When you list it like that.. it was a rather full on 3 episodes there.. No wonder I find from the end of Brunettes and the start of this ep to be not as easy to watch! [with the exception of playing possum, because Lee and Amanda are so sweet!] and I am sure the episode order is all weird.. but I’ll sort that out later! 😉
I am off to university tomorrow for a week..but have no fear – I’ve prepared the posts in advance to keep coming while I’m gone – I’ll be monitoring the blog as always but probably won’t be able to comment as much as I would like..Ugh! What timing! ugh..
Do feel free to chat amongst each other! I’ll be enjoying and relishing your comments between classes 😉
I’ll post this message on the home page also.. bye!

The two times (or is it three) that Lee and Amanda talk about the wedding Lee always gets a kind of dreamy quality to his voice…Amanda sounds scared to death but it’s almost as if he’s looking forward to it…IMO.
Anyway, you asked in the last post when we thought they fell in love. I have always thought that Lee fell in love with Amanda in this episode…at a specific point but we aren’t there yet so I’ll wait to discuss it 🙂 Amanda takes a bit longer though and of course Lee spends another year or so denying his true feelings…Silly Lee, although it did make for good TV 🙂

Timeline wise, I thought SMK did the best in terms of making a relationship build up realistically. They didn’t go from antagonistic to an item with nothing in between and we didn’t have “I think you’re hot, but you drive me up the wall, but yeah you’re so hot I can’t help be attracted anyway” ad nauseaum to where instead of going “Will they/Won’t they” it’s just “Would you quit hitting us over the head and just PUT THEM TOGETHER ALREADY!!”
Instead we see them start as almost a big brother/tagalong little sister, then move to more of a sibling closeness, to friends, to warm friends, to starting to find each other attractive, to gradually building as we see that neither are sure but both are interested, to a full on item, to dating, and then that wonderful proposal. If they’d drawn it out too much more it could have gotten irritating, but if they’d made it too much sooner, it would have been unbelievable after S1.
More TV writers really need to watch SMK and see how it’s done.
